International Women's Day is a great day to highlight the great work that so many females do for their businesses. Subsequently, it was fitting that we at The Brand Bar had a one-on-one chat with Natalee Leach, Director of The Payroll Collective.

Tell us about yourself and your business The Payroll Collective:

"After more than 20 years in Payroll working in senior leadership roles across a myriad of industries in both medium and large complex workplaces, I decided to launch a payroll consulting agency. The aim for me is simple – to deliver a brand that provides expert payroll solutions, driving positive change to transform and optimise payroll operations everywhere. This bridges my two favourite things, being payroll and helping others achieve great things."

How did it start and where are you now?

a) I tripped & fell into payroll straight out of finishing high school – too long ago to mention. b) I was privileged enough to have some incredible mentors along my career journey who inspired me and taught me how to become a leader in the payroll space. I have to also acknowledge some of the ‘not so great’ leaders too, as some of the greatest lessons learned were how ‘not’ to be. Hence, my style is to bring people on the journey always to ensure growth, to encourage often, celebrate the small things, and remember to be human first. c) Now I am the director of a successful consulting business and building a team of amazing people driving positive change everywhere we can.

What did you dream of doing when you were a little girl?

"A school teacher."

Is there a particular female figure that inspires you ?

"Dolly Parton for sure, what a woman. From humble beginnings to one of the most impactful female artists of all time. No matter her level in society, wealth or fame, she continues to inspire people through her humility, kindness and passion to drive positive change."

Define a great leader—What are three traits you think great leaders possess?

"Leaders are ones who can drive businesses through living and breathing company values. A leader is someone who brings their team on the journey together, helping teams learn, grow and develop."

What does gender equality mean to you?

"It means we hire on true values, skills and capability without rating gender at all.  We all have a seat at the table to all be heard and included."

What advice did you receive early in your career that has stayed with you?

"You do what's right as opposed to what's easy. Diversity is having a seat at the table, inclusion is having a voice, and belonging is having that voice be heard."

Based on your own experience, what advice would you give to women considering starting their own business?

"- Celebrate success both big and small - Take your employees on the journey - Share your knowledge everywhere; knowledge is power - You can maintain a very successful business whilst reminding yourself and others to be a human first."

What main change would you like to see for young girls in the next generation?

"Don't fuss around finishing."
